Our problem is not related to self-shadowing. The "artifacts" to which I
was referring appeared only while shadow mapping.

We tried a number of things, focusing a lot on the "Shadow Map Size." As
mentioned, increasing this would decrease the size of the artifacts, but
suck up all available RAM resources before the problem went away.
I believe the "Shadow Fuzziness" just made fuzzy artifacts -- but still
blocky. I also believe the shadow became very grainy and unnatural.
